Football: Iran, Iraq power into Asian Cup knockout phase

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Iran sank Vietnam and Iraq beat Yemen as the neighbours and arch-rivals powered into the Asian Cup round of 16 on Saturday (Jan 12) ahead of their highly anticipated group decider next week.
Sardar Azmoun struck both goals in Iran's 2-0 win in Abu Dhabi, while teenager Mohanad Ali's early solo strike kick-started Iraq's 3-0 victory in Sharjah.
Iran and Iraq will meet in Dubai on Wednesday to decide who tops Group D in a repeat of their combustible quarter-final of 2015, which Iraq won on penalties.
Iran, looking to end a 43-year title drought since last winning Asian football's most coveted prize, could have scored four or five but for some poor finishing in Abu Dhabi.
"It's a pity our performance didn't produce a couple more goals," Iran coach Carlos Queiroz told reporters.
"But winning is the best medicine in football. To win two games and score seven goals - I have to praise my players because I am very demanding."
Saman Ghoddos and Mehdi Taremi went close for Asia's top-ranked team before Azmoun rose to head home a Ghoddos cross after 38 minutes.
The Rubin Kazan forward lashed in his third goal of the tournament from the edge of the box 20 minutes from time to give Iran a record ninth successive first-round victory dating back to 2007.
Co-favourites with South Korea to lift the Asian Cup, Iran crushed war-torn Yemen 5-0 in their opening Group D game.

'A FINISHER'

They were indebted to goalkeeper Alireza Safar Beiranvand for a courageous save from Nguyen Cong Phuong, but were otherwise barely ruffled by the South-east Asian champions.
"We just need to relax more," said Queiroz. "In the second half our anxiety to score a third goal led to some bad passes."
Queiroz singled out Azmoun, who came out of international retirement for the Asian Cup.
"He's a finisher," said the Portuguese, now in his eighth year as Iran coach.
"We have high hopes for him for this competition. But the way the team is contributing around him, and our movement in the last third, are very interesting."
In Sharjah, 18-year-old Ali scored a wonderful solo goal to put Iraq 1-0 up after 11 minutes, although questions must be raised of the Yemeni defence.
Pouncing on a loose back pass, Ali held off three defenders before rifling his shot past Jalal Hassan in the Yemen goal.
Bashar Resan doubled Iraq's lead midway through the first half when his deflected shot drifted in off the upright with Hassan slow to get across.
Ali hit the post in one of the rare highlights of the second half before Alaa Abbas struck in injury time, finishing sharply after Ahmed Yaseen's header into his path.

Emery won't shift blame to men for Wolves debacle

Emery won't shift blame to men for Wolves debacle
LONDON ̢ۢ Unai Emery refused to give up on Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after seeing his men embarrassed by Wolves in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux on Wednesday.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota all scored in the first half to condemn the Gunners to a third defeat in four games, severely denting their hopes of a top-four finish with just three games to go.
While the Arsenal manager Emery admitted that his fifth-placed team (66 points) were outplayed, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a consolation, he insisted they would continue to fight for Champions League football next season. They are in a battle with Tottenham (70 points), Chelsea (67) and Manchester United (64) for two spots in Europe's top club competition.
After their seventh away loss, with just a clean sheet this term, he was asked whether he would have harsh words with his players.
He said: "I am usually very critical with myself and I am angry with myself that we didn't do the game plan, (but) not with the players.
"First, it is with me and after that, my style and idea is to look in front and find a solution, not who is the player who is worst.
"The solution for me is... on Sunday at Leicester, (we) get our best performance and the best possibility to take the three points."
Wolves, who are seventh and remain on course for their best finish since their sixth place in 1980, were clinical in their finishing.
But Arsenal's wounds were also to a large extent self-inflicted - no thanks to careless passing, brittle defending and an erratic display of goalkeeping from Bernd Leno, who was culpable for the hosts' second and third goals.
Emery refused to criticise his No. 1, adding: "I don't want to speak individually about the players. We need to recover our confidence."
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Emery still has made a big mistake from the start and she should be blame for his lineup though. You cannot start Mustafi, Mavropanos, Jenkinson, Elneny, Guendouzi, at the same time, and NOT expect repercussions. I understand the need for rotation, but that was too many changes, and such a lack of quality coming in.
Emery: We started very well but the red card changed

I couldn't stop laughing at their debacle yesterday. I was tired of pundits and so called expert puting all the blame on Emery while praising Tuchel even though his personnal record isn't as good as Unai's. He isn't PSG coach anymore and they couldn't stop criticizing him.

Emery, Wenger, Kroenke: who to blame for Arsenal's sh*tshow

Unai Emery says he was happy with how Arsenal were implementing his game plan before the red card which saw Ainsley Maitland-Niles dismissed and reduced the Gunners to 10 men. The Spaniard explained that the idea was to control the match with good defensive positioning, but by the time the right back was sent off, Leicester had had 8 attempts

There is one massive reason Arsenal got thrashed last night in the Europa League final against Chelsea and that is the manager Unai Emery. Now, I will say straight up I am not calling for him to be sacked or anything like that and I do believe that he needs at least one more season to try and build the team in his image but neither will I make any more excuses for him.

A day after injured top scorer Harry Kane was ruled out till March, Tottenham's other in-form man Son Heung-min showed what Spurs would be missing during his absence owing to the Asian Cup. Handed the captain's armband, the South Korean revitalised the Taeguk Warriors with two assists against China at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi yesterday, after they were able to only scrape 1-0 wins in their first two Group C games. Son, playing less than 72 hours after Sunday's Premier League 1-0 loss to Manchester United, earned the first chance after he was tripped and Hwang Ui-jo put away the penalty after 14 minutes. His second assist came six minutes after the break, an inswinging corner that Kim Min-jae (above) met with a powerful header for his second goal of the Cup. Korea, joint favourites with Iran, won the group with nine points, with China on six. Kyrgyzstan beat the Philippines 3-1 to finish third but can still reach the last 16.

Spain wasteful but Enrique happy with chances created

VALENCIA ̢ۢ Spain coach Luis Enrique has played down his team's profligacy in their Euro 2020 opening qualifier against Norway by taking solace in how many chances they created at the Mestalla.
National daily AS was far from bowled over by the 2-1 win on Saturday, labelling the display as an "improvement without the finishing touch".
La Roja had 11 shots on target with another 15 failing to test the opposition goalkeeper, but the home team's dominance - they had 75 per cent of the ball - could not prevent their opponents, who had just two shots on target, from equalising through Joshua King's penalty.
However, Enrique was still encouraged as his team, who ground out the victory with goals from Rodrigo and skipper Sergio Ramos' "Panenka" spot kick, had done "the difficult thing (which) is to create the chances".
He told reporters post-game: "I was a striker and I know that if the chances are being created, then the goals come."
No player was more wasteful than Alvaro Morata, who squandered a number of opportunities to put the game to bed in both halves.
Enrique defended the much-maligned striker as a player reborn since his loan move to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in January, before praising his "best game since he has been with the Spain team".

POSITIVE START
A new road starts and what better way than to start winning against an opponent that has made it complicated despite the fact that we had the ball?
SERGIO RAMOS, Spain captain, who scored the penalty to beat Norway 2-1 after the visitors had equalised.

He said: "Morata, along with the other forwards Marco (Asensio) and Rodrigo, have been spectacular because of the work they put in.
"Morata looks much better in terms of confidence. He always has a good attitude, but he looks more confident. He was key for us at the end holding the ball up."
While Spain are expected to ease past Malta, Enrique urged his players to step up as they travel to the Group F minnows tomorrow.
He added: "We need to improve in terms of defending counter-attacks and pressing the ball but, no matter how much you improve, you will always give the team one or two chances, that's football."
And, despite Enrique's backing, Morata could find himself on the bench with Jaime Mata pushing for a first start.
The Getafe striker, who is the top Spanish scorer in LaLiga this season with 13 goals, has played an integral role in his fourth-placed side's unlikely push for a Champions League spot.
Mata replaced Morata in the last minute of the meeting with Norway and, after making his international debut, the 30-year-old is keen to seize his opportunity to be the panacea to the team's scoring woes.
He said: "It's a dream to make my debut, but now I have to work hard to make sure I stay in the team."

'Best league, worst officials': Warnock rages over Cardiff's controversial defeat

'Best league, worst officials': Warnock rages over Cardiff's controversial defeat

CARDIFF (AFP) - Cardiff manager Neil Warnock admitted he was so angry with his side's controversial defeat against Chelsea that he might play a weakened team at Manchester City on Wednesday (April 3).
Warnock was furious that Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta was allowed to head a late equaliser from a clearly offside position as the Blues hit back to win 2-1 on Sunday (March 31).
Relegation-threatened Cardiff had been leading with just six minutes left, but Azpilicueta's goal was followed by more controversy as Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger escaped a red card despite hauling down Kenneth Zohore.
Cardiff also felt they could have had two penalties, but it was Chelsea who took the points through Ruben Loftus-Cheek's stoppage-time header.
"It hurts. The referee had a decent game but we didn't get the major decisions. The linesman, though...It is so disappointing. Chelsea know they have got away with murder today," Warnock said.
"When you don't win and it is nothing to do with ourselves it is a kick in the teeth.
"Against the big teams you have to have VAR because you don't get the big decisions.

"The equalising goal is the winning goal really, and if you can't see across the line and see offside I don't know why we are in the game.
"I look at the two penalties we should have had and the red card against Kenneth Zohore.
"The biggest and best league in the world but probably the worst officials at the minute."
Cardiff are five points from safety but have a game in hand at title-chasing City in midweek.
After being denied a chance to close the gap on their relegation rivals, Warnock claimed he might even surrender the points by fielding his youngest players in a match they are likely to lose anyway against Pep Guardiola's side.
While Warnock is likely to change his mind once his anger subsides, his team selection will be closely monitored by Liverpool, who are fighting with City for the title.
"We keep getting knock-backs, I will probably play the U23s on Wednesday against Manchester City and try to keep it down to 10 or 11," Warnock said.
"It doesn't matter who you play at the minute, it is who has a flag in his hand and who has a whistle." Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri conceded his team had been fortunate to escape with three points that kept their top four bid alive.
Blues fans chanted for the under-fire Sarri to be sacked in the second half before their comeback gave him a little breathing space.
"They were probably unhappy for the result. I can understand, I can understand very well. I am getting used to this," Sarri said.
"We were a little bit nervous. We didn't play well in the first half and we conceded a stupid goal.
"In the end we deserved to win. I don't know if the goal was offside, I have to see the situation. Sometimes we can be lucky."

Football: Ozil leads five-star Arsenal past Bournemouth

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil made the most of being handed a rare start by Arsenal boss Unai Emery as the German masterminded a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday (Feb 27) to keep the Gunners in pole position for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Ozil opened the scoring after just four minutes before turning provider for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double Arsenal's lead.
Lys Mousset briefly gave Bournemouth hope before half-time, but Ozil and Mkhitaryan combined once more to tee up Laurent Koscielny to make it 3-1 before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette rounded off an eighth straight Premier League win at the Emirates for Emery's men.
The Spanish coach has been reluctant to use Arsenal's highest earner in his debut season in charge as Ozil was making just his second league start of the year.
However, the former Real Madrid midfielder showed why Arsenal handed him a contract worth a reported £350,000 a week last January by rolling back the years as the link-up between him and Mkhitaryan questioned why they had not started together in the Premier League since November.
Emery now has a welcome selection headache for Saturday's crucial north London derby away to Tottenham on whether to stick with Ozil and Mkhitaryan, while Aubameyang and Lacazette are also in top form and vying for a place up front.
Arsenal were helped along the way by some feeble Bournemouth defending as the Cherries succumbed to a 10 consecutive away defeat.
Artur Boruc should have got a stronger hand to Ozil's shot that bounced over the Polish goalkeeper to give the hosts a perfect start.
At the other end, Arsenal's own defensive deficiencies were also on show at times as only a fine save from Bernd Leno denied Ryan Fraser an equaliser before Dan Gosling's follow-up effort was bravely blocked by Matteo Guendouzi.
Bournemouth caused their own problems again in the build-up to Arsenal's second as Adam Smith gifted possession to Mkhitaryan, but it was still brilliantly pounced upon as the Armenian exchanged passes with Ozil before slotting into an empty net.
A hint of complacency cost Arsenal moments later when Guendouzi was caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Gosling and he squared for Mousset to roll into an empty net.
However, Arsenal clicked through the gears after the break and put the game to bed before the hour mark.
The Ozil-Mkhitaryan connection again opened up Bournemouth down Arsenal's right and Mkhitaryan picked out Koscielny, whose shot deflected in off Nathan Ake.
Mkhitaryan was the creator again for the fourth when his through ball freed Aubameyang in behind the Bournemouth defence and the Gabon striker stayed cool to round Boruc and slot home his 19th goal of the season.
A start for Aubameyang meant Lacazette had to settle for a place on the bench, but the French international still had time to add his 14th of the campaign with a brilliant free-kick 12 minutes from time.

Football: Liverpool's Klopp fined over referee comments

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was fined £45,000 (S$80,000) by the Football Association on Thursday (Feb 21) for suggesting referee Kevin Friend had favoured West Ham in his side's 1-1 draw at the London Stadium earlier this month.
Klopp, whose side are currently second on goal difference in the Premier League behind Manchester City, said he thought Friend realised he should have ruled out Sadio Mane's 22nd-minute opener as James Milner was clearly offside in the build-up and tried to make up for it over the remainder of the game.
"Jurgen Klopp has been fined £45,000 after accepting an FA charge for comments made following Liverpool's league game against West Ham United on Feb 4, 2019," the FA said in a statement.
"His comments made during a post-match interview breached FA Rule E3(1), as they questioned the integrity of the match referee and/or implied bias."
In December, Klopp was fined £8,000 after he charged onto the pitch to hug goalkeeper Alisson Becker following his side's late derby win against Everton at Anfield.
