Football: Klopp confirms Firmino fitness for Champions League final

MADRID (AFP) - Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is fit for Saturday's Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur despite missing the end of the Premier League season, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday (May 31).
"From his point of view, yes, he is ready," Klopp said at a press conference in Madrid on Friday, just before his squad, with Firmino, trained on the pitch at the Metropolitano Stadium.
However, Klopp refused to say whether Firmino - who has been struggling with a groin problem - would start, joking that he would only do so if Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed his line-up.
"If Poch afterwards says the exact line-up then call me, then you will know. If not, I thought I'd keep at least a few question marks open."
Klopp added: "He is fit, he has trained, you will see him later, he is here, and if nothing happens from the moment when he left the plane to now, then he should be fine."
The Brazilian did not feature in Liverpool's last three matches and before that only came on as a late substitute in their 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-final.

Jordan Cousins: QPR midfielder on social media, his passion for the local community and keeping Premier League dream alive

Abuse hurled at football players used to be something confined solely to the terraces where angry supporters vented their frustrations at what they are witnessing on the pitch.

Yet the development of technology over the last decade has triggered new methods of expressing opinions on anything and everything associated with ‘the beautiful game’.

Jordan Cousins has endured a topsy turvy spell at QPR – but he is beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel

QPR midfielder Jordan Cousins used to be an avid user of social media, but says he now distances himself from the likes of Twitter and Instagram.

Cousins, 25, believes some players are doing themselves more harm than good spending excessive time looking at these platforms.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT.com, he said: “Football is very intense, I can see why some players struggle.

“When I was younger I used to look at it a lot, but not anymore. It’s not worth it.

“I’ve slowly tried to stay away from all types of social media, it’s a very occasional glance these days.

“If you spend too much time on it then it can really play on your mental side.

“Some players are constantly on it, that doesn’t do them any good whatsoever in my opinion.

“I’ve said to a couple of the lads here to stay away from it, it does more harm than good.”

The west London outfit have endured a difficult season, with a wretched run in 2019 – which saw Steve McClaren lose his job last month – yielding just two wins in 18 league games since Boxing Day.

A 4-0 win against Swansea last Saturday all but confirmed Rangers’ Championship status for another season, but owner Tony Fernandes has come in for tough criticism on social media, as well as the squad, in what has been a testing period for the club.

Cousins added: “It’s all fun and games when you’re winning, but when you’re not it can be a really awful place [Twitter].

“Fans can be very ruthless, especially on social media. Some of the criticism on there is too much in all honesty.

“I feel like it could really damage some the brain of some footballers.

“Luckily for me I’m a very strong minded person. I’ve been through a lot and I don’t let that sort of thing affect me.

“Being a footballer can be a lonely world. We get a lot of spare time, so that’s why I keep myself busy so my mind is in a good place.”

The former England youth international arrived at Loftus Road in July 2016 with hefty expectations placed upon his shoulders following a £1.4m move from boyhood club Charlton.

It has been far from plain sailing for Cousins, however, enduring more than his fair share of setbacks during his three-year stint in W12 to date.

Injuries have massively stagnated his progress, while he has also struggled to nail down a regular berth in midfield – being deployed in a variety of positions under several different managers.

Many players would have struggled to cope with the emotional repercussions of that, but not Cousins.

Away from the bubble of professional football, he has kept himself busy.

Cousins has 12 part-time coaches who deliver the sessions for him across south-east London

Two years ago he set up Evolution Sports, a coaching company that helps promote social inclusion in schools and sports clubs across south-east London.

Cousins has 12 part-time coaches on his books who deliver the sessions, and with the work load set to increase in the coming months – some of them will be taken on a full-time basis.

The midfielder also holds an FA qualified coaching licence himself and has aspirations of working in an academy when he eventually hangs up his boots.

talkSPORT.com were invited down to a session at James Wolfe Primary school in Greenwich, where Cousins spent the early years of his life, and his passion for his community shone through.

“It’s been a very rewarding initiative for me,” he explained.

“We’ve been doing this for nearly two years now and we’re constantly looking at ways to expand.

“At the moment we work with six different primary schools in the area, delivering 50 hours a week coaching, in and outside of school premises.

“It’s just part of me giving back to the kids. I’ve been in the same situation at the end of the day.

“There’s not a lot for them to do after school these days, a lot of things are shutting down in the community.

“By me creating this company it means they can stay after school and keep them in a safe place.

“We’ve had a couple of lads have trials at professional clubs. One lad got to go to Charlton’s pre-camp, so that was good.

“I will use my contacts at Charlton and QPR to help these kids progress even further if they are good enough, but first and foremost it’s about them having fun and keeping fit in their spare time.”

Cousins’ long term future is still very much up in the air, with no discussions yet to take place between the club and his representatives over a new deal.

QPR have the option to activate a clause in his current deal to extend his contract by another season, but to date there has been no indication this will be taken up.

â€Å“It’s been difficult for me at QPR,” he admitted.

“But this season I feel like I’ve seen a light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve personally really enjoyed it as I’ve played regularly and I feel like I’m getting back to my best.

“My sole aim coming into this season was to play as many games as possible and stay injury free and I’ve been able to do that.

â€Å“At the end of the day I’m very lucky and privileged to get paid for something I love doing and play in front of thousands of people. I don’t forget my roots and I know just how fortunate I am.”

Cousins has made 32 appearances so far this term, just five games short off the total he had featured in the entirety of the previous two seasons.

The utility man has shown signs of returning to his best form, which was seen on a regular basis for his former side Charlton.

The lung-busting run and subsequent strike against Leeds in the FA Cup gave supporters a glimpse of the potential he possesses.

He followed that up an excellent display – in his words his best in a QPR shirt to date – in a narrow defeat against Watford in the fifth round of the competition.

Cousins is content with what he has achieved so far in his career, but knows he has more to give.

“Hopefully I’ve got eight to 10 years left in football. My dream is and always has been to play in the Premier League,” he said.

â€Å“Some people might turn their nose up at that thought, but I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am right now and I won’t shy away from my dreams.

â€Å“There’s been up and downs, by no means would I say I’m really pleased with my career so far, but I am content with where I am right now.

â€Å“I know what I need to do to take my game to the next level. Whether it happens in the next two years, five years or whenever I will strive to get to that stage.”

Cousins has a way to go to achieve that, but whether that happens or not – it won’t be for the lack of trying.

Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea: Tony Cascarino slams Blues for ‘playing with a small-club mentality’ at Anfield

Chelsea ‘played with a small-club mentality’ during Sunday’s visit to Liverpool, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Aside from a 10-minute spell after the Reds scored their second goal – a truly superb strike from Mohamed Salah – in which Chelsea dominated, the Blues were emphatically outplayed by their Anfield opponents.

Liverpool continued their march to the title with a superb defeat of Chelsea

1

Liverpool continued their march to the title with a superb defeat of Chelsea

Only the brilliant goalkeeping of Kepa prevented Jurgen Klopp’s side taking an earlier lead, and when Sadio Mane netted the opening goal with a close-range header there was no way back for the Blues.

Salah’s strike, which flew past Kepa two minutes later, guaranteed the hosts a valuable three points that returned them to the top of the Premier League table.

Eden Hazard burst to life after Salah scored and missed two glorious chances, hitting the post then being denied by Alisson, but that was the only threat Chelsea posed throughout a lax and lethargic performance.

Sarri’s decision to not field a natural striker – Hazard was selected upfront – revealed much about Chelsea’s approach to the match, and former Stamford Bridge striker Tony Cascarino says the Blues went to Anfield with a ‘small-club mentality’.

In his Times column on Monday, Cascarino writes: “Liverpool’s performance against Chelsea was as impressive as any they have given in the Premier League for a few months.

“They had good intensity – particularly after half-time – and they controlled the game.

“Chelsea were disappointing, playing with a small-club mentality and, but for the odd flash of creativity involving Eden Hazard, they didn’t look like they could even take a point off Liverpool.”

Cascarino also commented on Manchester City’s defeat of Crystal Palace, which sent them top of the table before Liverpool’s victory put them back in first.

He criticised Palace for refusing to attack Pep Guardiola’s side, and compared their approach on Sunday with Huddersfield’s negative style of play against Tottenham on Saturday – and Chelsea’s approach to their clash at Anfield.

“Another win for Manchester City and another team to roll over and offer little threat in attack,” Cascarino continues. “I know Crystal Palace managed to beat City earlier in the season but that made their cautious approach yesterday all the more disappointing.

“Huddersfield were the same in their 4-0 defeat at Tottenham – lots of changes but still a five-man midfield and one shot on target – and in some ways Chelsea were as bad against Liverpool.”

Still seemingly under the radar in the real world and the fantasy one, Lacazette is a man on form. Not only does he have 13 goals and 11 assists this season in the Premier League, he̢۪s notched four goals and three assists in his last six and Everton could now feel his force.

Football: Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United and Tottenham confirmed for ICC Singapore

SINGAPORE - English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, along with Italian Serie A's top clubs Juventus and Inter Milan have been announced on Wednesday morning (March 27) as the teams playing in the International Champions Cup (ICC) in Singapore in July.
The pre-season tournament for Europe's top football clubs will be played in Singapore's National Stadium.
The Red Devils will take on Inter on July 20 and a day later, the Old Lady of Turin will meet Spurs.
Legends from the clubs - Dwight Yorke (United), Francesco Toldo (Inter), Fabrizio Ravanelli (Juventus) and Teddy Sheringham (Tottenham) were present at the launch at the Incubator, near the Padang.
With no World Cup and European Championship played in the summer, the stage is set for a galaxy of stars to play in Singapore, apart from the South American players involved in the Copa America.
Sheringham said: "There is nothing like seeing the teams in the flesh. And with no distraction of other big tournaments (in Europe), hopefully all the big players will be on show for our Asian fans."
Yorke added: "We know that Asia is one of our biggest markets and, certainly, Singapore is very important. We want to feel connected to our fanbase and we are excited to come back (to Singapore) and to improve our brand as well."
United's visit will be particularly exciting to its large fanbase here. The club last played in Singapore in 2001, when a side that featured Roy Keane, David Beckham and even goalkeeper Fabien Barthez playing up front defeated a Singapore Selection side 8-1, with Lions striker Indra Sahdan scoring for the hosts.
Former Italian international striker Ravanelli took the opportunity to indulge in some banter with Inter, saying: "We are different from Inter because we (Juventus) are always at the top. We are constantly expanding tactically but we also want to improve our knowledge and understanding of this part of the world."
In 2017, when the ICC first came to Singapore, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Inter Milan were the elite clubs that were invited.
Last year, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were the teams that battled it out at Kallang.
