Celtic 1-0 Kilmarnock: Jozo Simunovic’s second-half header sees Hoops edge past Killie to go 12 points clear

Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic paid his own fitting tribute to the late Billy McNeill by heading in the winner against Kilmarnock at Parkhead.

In was an emotional day following the death of the man who captained the side that won the European Cup in 1967 and later went on to manage the club.

Despite being mostly on the back foot Killie arguably had the better chances before the break while Celtic had numerous and mostly inaccurate efforts on goal.

However, Simunovic – wearing the number five so closely associated with McNeill – headed in a Callum McGregor cross with 67 minutes showing on the clock to give the hosts a 1-0 Ladbrokes Premiership win.

With three fixtures remaining, Celtic moved 12 points ahead of second-placed Rangers – and they could secure an eighth successive title as early as Sunday if their Old Firm rivals slip up at home against Aberdeen.

Interim boss Neil Lennon, who along with skipper Scott Brown had laid a wreath at McNeill’s statue outside the stadium before the game, made two changes with midfielder Tom Rogic and winger Scott Sinclair coming in for Olivier Ntcham and Jonny Hayes.

Injury and suspension meant Killie boss Steve Clarke had to field a makeshift central defence of on-loan veteran Alex Bruce and midfielder Gary Dicker.

On-loan midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu was not allowed to play against his parent club while Aaron Tshibola, Conor McAleny and Liam Millar were handed starts.

There was as an appropriate 67-second round of applause in McNeill’s honour before the game and when the action got under way Celtic, wearing black armbands with number five on them, looked most likely to make the breakthrough.

Brown, Emilio Izaguirre, Odsonne Edouard and Rogic all had efforts on goal of varying quality.

However, in the 14th minute there was a Killie penalty claim when Brown challenged defender Stephen O’Donnell inside the box but referee Willie Collum waved play on.

Four minutes later the Ayrshire side had a great chance when former Rangers winger Chris Burke found himself clean through on goal after the break of the ball but Hoops goalkeeper Scott Bain made a crucial block.

Bain then had to make good saves from Millar and McAleny as Killie grew in confidence.

In the 27th minute, Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer gifted Eamonn Brophy possession but made a fine recovery tackle as the Rugby Park attacker took too long to get his shot away.

It was another let off for the home side but Killie still had plenty of defending to do before reaching half-time goalless.

More attempts on goal by both sides followed early in the second half, most notably when Bain had to stretch to tip Burke’s curling effort from 20 yards over the bar after Hoops defender Mikael Lustig had passed straight to him.

It was a tightly fought affair at Celtic Park

Amid increasing Hoops frustration, Edouard curled a shot wide, Killie keeper Danny Bachmann made a great save from McGregor and O’Donnell stopped Edouard getting on the end of Rogic’s pass.

However, that frustration was replaced with joy when Simunovic leapt to head McGregor’s past the flailing Bachman.

The game stretched further as the visitors threw men forward in search of the equaliser – but perhaps the match was destined to be decided by Celtic’s number five.

David de Gea: Manchester United goalkeeper will NOT be dropped despite recent mistakes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed David de Gea will play for Manchester United in their next Premier League match against Huddersfield.

De Gea, the Spain international, has long been one of United’s greatest servants, having been named the club’s Player of the Season for four of the previous five years.

De Gea has made a number of uncharacteristic errors this season

However, his performances over recent months have fallen well short of his usual high standards, with a number of high profile mistakes made across the past few matches.

His latest – a glaring error that secured Chelsea a draw in last week’s clash at Old Trafford – led to calls for Solskjaer to drop De Gea and give Sergio Romero the chance to play.

Romero is widely regarded as one of the best backup glovesmen in world football, though he’s been restricted to six appearances this season – none of which have come in the Premier League.

A number of fans want Romero to play United’s final two matches of the campaign, but Solskjaer confirmed De Gea will feature in Saturday’s visit to Huddersfield as his backup picked up an injury in training.

“I would think so, yeah… he will play,” Solskjaer said in his pre-match press conference.

“Sergio was injured yesterday so didn’t train, tweaked his knee, so David’s been training well this week.”

Solskjaer added on his under-fire keeper: “Towards the end now he’s been in headlines maybe for the wrong reasons, but, as I’ve said so many times, he has to deal with that.

“They’ve been such a tight-knit group, so they’ve experienced better times obviously than just now but he’s ready for Sunday.”

Asked if Romero would have started at Huddersfield if he had not sustained a knee injury, Solskjaer said: “Ifs and buts and hypothetical questions. Sergio knows how highly I rate him.”

Football: World Cup winner Buffon to leave PSG

Football: World Cup winner Buffon to leave PSG

PARIS (AFP) - Gianluigi Buffon will leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer after it was agreed to not renew the former Italy captain's contract, the French champions announced on Wednesday (June 5).
"Following joint discussions, Paris Saint-Germain and Gianluigi Buffon have agreed to not renew the legendary goalkeeper's contract which expires on 30 June 2019," PSG said in a statement.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper, who won the World Cup in 2006 and is Italy's most-capped player with 176 appearances, did not say whether he would be retiring from the game after leaving the French capital.
He joined PSG last summer after ending a trophy-packed 17-year career at Italian giants Juventus and played 25 times in all competitions for PSG last season, winning the Ligue 1 title and the pre-season Champions Trophy.
"Today my adventure outside Italy comes to an end," Buffon said in a statement.
"Ernest Hemingway wrote that there are only two places in the world where people can live happily: at home and in Paris. Today onwards, this will also apply to me: Paris, in some way, will always remain my home."
This season's league title was the 10th of Buffon's career, adding to a bulging trophy cabinet that contains just about every honour in football.
However the Champions League has eluded him despite him spending the bulk of his career at Juve, one of Europe's biggest clubs, and it was hoped that he might break his duck with the Qatari-funded Parisians.
However despite winning the league at a canter, the past season was a poor one for both Buffon and a team with lofty ambitions on the European stage.
They missed out on both domestic cup competitions and most importantly were dumped out of the Champions League by Manchester United in embarrassing style, blowing a 2-0 first-leg lead to go out on away goals following a controversial last-gasp penalty.
Buffon made a crucial error that helped United achieve their remarkable comeback, spilling Marcus Rashford's weak shot into the path of Romelu Lukaku to allow the Belgian to score the away side's second and set up a dramatic finish.

Celtic news: Leigh Griffiths set to return to training following break from football in December

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths will begin a “phased return” to the club this week.

Griffiths, 28, has been out of action since December with personal issues, however, he will work at the club’s training complex in Lennoxtown, in conjunction with their medical and sports science staff in the hope he can return to first-team training in the future.

Leigh Griffiths took some time out of the game in December

Leigh Griffiths took some time out of the game in December

Interim manager Neil Lennon told the club’s official website: “We are really pleased that Leigh will be looking to get things going again at Lennoxtown and be making a phased return to training.

“In no way will we put any timescale on a possible return to the first-team. Instead, we will make sure we work with him on the best, most productive way forward.

“He will really be focusing on his own programme at the moment and then we will see what progress we make from there.

“We will not rush him in any way and we will allow him, of course, to take things slowly and at the pace he is comfortable with.

“As the club has been doing throughout the last period, we’ll continue to give Leigh every support to make sure that his health and well-being are our number one priority.

“We’ll work with him to ensure he has everything he needs to give him the chance to get back to where he was, but understanding totally that he will need time and space.

“It will be great to see him back, even at this very early stage, and we’ll make sure we give him our total support.”

Manchester City transfer news: Why Pep Guardiola may need to sell Gabriel Jesus to land Atletico Madrid star Rodrigo

Manchester City may need to sell Gabriel Jesus to land Atletico Madrid’s £61million-rated star Rodrigo, according to reports.

City have emerged as the favourites to sign the 22-year-old holding midfielder, but Atletico are keen on Jesus as a replacement for the departing Antoine Griezmann.

It could mean the La Liga giants demand the Brazilian striker comes as part of any deal for their talented Spaniard.

Rodrigo has excelled in his debut season for Atletico Madrid

Rodrigo has made 48 appearances in his debut season at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and has been compared to Barcelona midfield maestro Sergio Busquets.

Guardiola is keen to sign another holding midfielder to compete with Fernandinho, who missed the final four games of the season with a knee injury.

With Griezmann set to join Barcelona in a £104million deal, Atletico will have funds to spend and The Sun claim they have identified Jesus as an ideal replacement.

Gabriel Jesus’ playing time has been limited due to Sergio Aguero’s form

Despite playing second fiddle to Sergio Aguero in the Premier League and Champions League, Jesus netted 21 goals in the 2018/19 season.

Most of his playing time came in domestic cup competitions and he started and scored in Manchester City’s 6-0 thrashing of Watford in Saturday’s FA Cup final to win a historic treble.

Jesus, a £27million signing from Palmeiras, has netted 45 goals in 100 appearances since making his City debut in January 2017.

Meanwhile, Benfica are reportedly thinking of almost doubling Joao Felix’s £100million release clause as interest in the wonderkid increases.

City, Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the 19-year-old, who scored 15 league goals to help Benfica win a 37th Primeira Liga title after finishing two points ahead of Porto.

Felix, an attacking midfielder, became the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the Europa League in a 4-2 win over Frankfurt last month.
