Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola slams Premier League over fixture scheduling ahead of Champions League clash with Tottenham

Pep Guardiola has criticised the Premier League for scheduling Manchester City’s fixture against Crystal Palace just three days before the Champions League clash with Spurs.

City, who can still complete a famous quadruple, beat Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday ahead of Wednesday’s quarter-final – which they currently trail 1-0 after the first leg.

Spurs have been given an extra day’s rest after their comfortable 4-0 victory over Huddersfield early on Saturday afternoon.

“I don’t understand why the Premier League didn’t put the game at 12.30 on Saturday,” Guardiola said at his press conference on Tuesday.

It’s not the first time the Spaniard has hit out at English football’s hectic and intense fixture schedule.

Last season, Guardiola warned the intense festive period will ‘kill the players’ after Kyle Walker suffered an injury.

City face a season-defining week with back-to-back clashes with Spurs at the Etihad – first in the Champions League and then on Saturday in the Premier League.

The champions are two points behind league-leaders Liverpool with a game in hand, but the Reds have a more favourable run-in.

Defender John Stones believes his side must relish the pressure of competing on all fronts as they bid to complete an unprecedented quadruple.

“The quadruple is the dream we are trying to achieve and definitely something we are fighting for,” he said.
