Arsenal transfer news: Leicester star James Maddison is perfect Aaron Ramsey replacement, says Tony Cascarino

Arsenal should sign Leicester star James Maddison this summer to fill the void left by Aaron Ramsey, former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino believes.

Ramsey, the midfielder, will leave the north London club after 11 years this summer to join Juventus on a free transfer.

Despite his impending departure, Unai Emery, the Arsenal manager, continues to utilise Ramsey as a key player this season, and he has been rewarded with the Wales international putting in some excellent performances.

The 28-year-old has chipped in with five goals and eight assists in all competitions this term, and he will be sorely missed when his time at the Emirates finally comes to an end.

It is up to Emery and his coaching team to replace Ramsey, and the Gunners are sure to utilise the transfer market to do just that.

And Cascarino, the former Ireland striker, says the perfect replacement already plays in the Premier League.

“I look at [James] Maddison and I think, ‘Arsenal is your team’,” Cascarino wrote in his Times column.

“The long goal for the north London side is targeting certain players in the summer and Maddison should be the man to replace Aaron Ramsey.

“There are not many great No 10s in world football but Arsenal desperately need someone who plays like the Leicester City man.

“The problem for No 10s is that most are asked to work without the ball. The role was deemed a luxury in past, their job was to create chances and make a difference in attack. Mesut Özil and Dele Alli are expected to deliver without the ball and to be a defender for their teams too.

“You have to be very gifted to do that and nine out of ten gifted players do not want to work without the ball.

Critics have raved about Maddison this season

“Maddison’s work-rate is good and getting better. There is no question about whether he is technical enough for the top flight.”

Maddison, who joined Leicester from Norwich last summer, has been one of the Foxes’ standout players this season.

He’s scored seven goals and created a further six in 31 appearances, and has been tipped to win his first England cap over the coming months.
