Sir Alex Ferguson aims cheeky dig at Gary Neville following Manchester United legends’ win over Bayern Munich

Sir Alex Ferguson jokingly made fun of Gary Neville following Manchester United legends’ 5-0 win over Bayern Munich.

The anniversary game marked 20 years since the treble-winning campaign, while also raising over £1.5m for the Manchester United Foundation.

Fans got a chance to enjoy a match at Old Trafford this season, something that has not happened much in recent times, as a number of legendary players, such as David Beckham, Japp Stam, Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke, pulled on the famous shirt once more.

While United edged past Bayern with two late goals in Barcelona back in 1999, the scoreline was far wider this time around, as efforts from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Yorke, Nicky Butt, Louis Saha and Beckham earned them a 5-0 victory.

One United legend who was struggling to hit the target was Sky Sports pundit Neville, who showed his lack of prowess in front of goal, firing wide when well placed, leaving Ferguson and his assistant Steve McClaren laughing on the bench.

The right-back, who netted seven times in 602 appearances for United, spoke about his lack of fitness and what his former manager told him after the match.

“You couldn’t shoot 20 years ago son! Why the hell you trying today?” Neville wrote on Instagram.

“We’re finished physically to be honest with you, you watch the lads in the Premier League and they’re amazing,” he told BT Sport.

“I watch them every week and you feel how far you are away.

“My mind knows what to do but my body isn’t taking me there and that’s why we’re all retired.

“It’s brilliant to be out here, we’ve raised a lot of money for United’s foundation, they do a lot of work with young kids who need an opportunity in life and that’s the most important thing.

“It was worth coming just to be in the changing room pre-match.

“I was happy with the goal at the end for David [Beckham] and Nicky’s [Butt] goal too.”

It wasn’t so close this time with the United legends trouncing their opponents 5-0 thanks to goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Nicky Butt, Louis Saha and David Beckham.

Red Devils fans enjoyed seeing the old band get back together but it was Golden Balls who truly stole the show.

Beckham, who was sold to Real Madrid in 2003, sported the iconic No.7 shirt and had a brilliant game, capped off with his goal that he celebrated at the Stretford End.

And a number of United fans took to Twitter to gush over their former player, with some even asking the club if they could re-sign 44-year-old Beckham.

A year after suffering Sky Bet Championship play-off final heartbreak at the hands of Fulham, Villa made amends as El Ghazi and McGinn headed home either side of half-time to give them control of a pulsating encounter.

Rams substitute Jack Marriott set up a tense finish by halving the deficit nine minutes from time but Villa dug in to hold on.

Victory for Dean Smith’s side in the most lucrative game in world football will pocket the West Midlands club a minimum £170million and returns them to the top flight for the first time since relegation in 2016.

With Prince William and John Carew watching on from a box, all eyes turned to Grealish and James Chester as the duo prepared to lift the trophy together.

However, a slight nudge sent it careering into the 23-year-old’s face – leaving him with a nasty looking cut.

Brighton 1-1 Newcastle: Pascal Gross rescues vital point to boost Seagulls’ survival bid

Brighton took a step towards Premier League safety after Pascal Gross rescued a point against Newcastle at the Amex.

The German netted the Seagulls’ first league goal in more than 12 hours to move the club four points clear of Cardiff with two games to play.

Gross nets the equaliser

Gross nets the equaliser

Cardiff’s survival hopes were dealt a humongous blow with a 1-0 defeat at Fulham earlier in the day, but Chris Hughton’s men did not look like capitalising after a hopeless first-half.

Ayoze Perez gave Newcastle the lead with a thunderous volley as the hosts saw just 38% of the ball in the opening 45 minutes.

However, Brighton were reinvigorated after the break, thanks largely to the introduction of Solly March.

And a prolonged spell was rewarded when Gross latched onto Glenn Murray’s header to nod past Martin Dubravka in the 75th minute.

The Seagulls then pushed for a winner which would’ve all-but relegated Cardiff – and Murray should’ve found it when he headed over from a yard out late on.

Nonetheless, one more win will be enough to secure Brighton’s top-flight status, and Cardiff need to win their final two games to have any chance.

Newcastle – without ill captain Jamaal Lascelles and injured record signing Miguel Almiron – were in no mood to roll over and dampened the optimism with 18 minutes played.

Paul Dummett’s deep cross from the left was superbly chested down by Salomon Rondon for Perez to expertly smash his fifth goal in three games into the top right corner from close to the penalty spot.

Perez put Newcastle ahead

2

Perez put Newcastle ahead

Venezuela international Rondon was then denied a penalty by referee Mike Dean after his heels appeared to be clipped by Brighton captain Bruno.

Spanish forward Perez, whose goal was the only effort on target at either end in the opening 45 minutes, had earlier taken an inadvertent whack from Seagulls defender Shane Duffy and reluctantly had to be replaced by Kenedy 12 minutes before the break.

The Magpies had another spot-kick claim turned down early in the second half when Dale Stephens handled Isaac Hayden’s goal-bound effort from a Matt Ritchie corner.

Albion continued to offer little in attack, although centre-back Duffy rippled the side-netting from a Gross corner.

The hosts then claimed for a penalty six minutes later when Glenn Murray received a nudge from Ritchie following Bernardo’s cross.

Time appeared to be ticking away from Brighton before a leveller duly arrived with 75 minutes on the clock.

Bruno’s hopeful cross from the right was headed on by veteran striker Murray, allowing the onrushing Gross to beat Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to the ball and nod home.

Murray had a golden chance to grab a dramatic winner and virtually ensure survival but he headed over from Knockaert’s cross in the final minute, leaving Hughton’s men to wait a little longer to secure their Premier League status.

Gordon Strachan: Former Scotland boss issues apology for Adam Johnson comments

Former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan has apologised for his controversial remarks on Adam Johnson.

Strachan has been accused of linking racist abuse with the convicted sex offenders’ situation while appearing on Sky Sports’ The Debate programme.

Strachan has come under fire for recent comments about Johnson

2

Strachan has come under fire for recent comments about Johnson

Johnson has recently been released after serving three years in prison for engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan, and the ex-England winger has not ruled out a return to football.

Strachan said: “If he goes on to the pitch and people start calling him names, have we got to do the same as it is to the racist situation?

“Is it all right to call him names now after doing his three years – have we got to allow that to happen?”

Adam Johnson was released from prison after serving three years

2

Adam Johnson was released from prison after serving three years

In a statement issued through Press Association Sport, Strachan said: “Given the response in the last 24 hours to a point made on The Debate programme on Sky Sports from over a week ago, and having reflected on it personally, it is important for me to address the issues that have arisen.

“In no way did I intended to confuse or conflate the very serious issue of racism targeted at footballers with the potential verbal abuse towards a player who has been convicted of a sexual offence.

Strachan is an occasional contributor to the programme but Press Association Sport understands he will not be used again.

“Having reviewed the particular segment in light of the reaction, I fully acknowledge that the imprecise use of language in my initial response has left open a perception that should easily have been avoided. For that I sincerely apologise.

“I should have communicated my point more clearly and without the need to refer to the earlier discussion, during which I was clear in my condemnation of the racist abuse which continues to blight football.

“I am also cognisant of the fact that the question asked on a football debate show – whether Adam Johnson will be able to resume his professional football career because of the stigma attached to his crime – did not afford the opportunity to demonstrate the requisite empathy or support towards the survivor.

“I would like to take the opportunity to atone for that: to reaffirm my condemnation of the behaviour that led to the player’s conviction, to convey my heartfelt sympathy and support to the survivor, and to apologise for any unintended distress caused.”

Strachan is not an employee of Sky so is not subject to its disciplinary protocols, but the broadcaster has distanced itself from the Scot’s remarks.

A Sky statement read: “The comments were made by a guest on The Debate. Of course Sky Sports does not support the comments and we’re sorry for the offence they have caused.”

Football: Messi double earns Barca a point in thriller with Valencia

Football: Messi double earns Barca a point in thriller with Valencia

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi scored for a ninth consecutive match, but his latest double on Saturday (Feb 2) was only enough to earn Barcelona a 2-2 draw against Valencia.
Kevin Gameiro and Dani Parejo's penalty gave Valencia a surprise two-goal lead but Messi pulled one back with his own spot-kick before curling in a brilliant equaliser with 26 minutes left.
After their stunning comeback against Sevilla in midweek, Barca looked destined to again finish the job, but Valencia held on for a point after a breathless contest at the Camp Nou.
Messi's 20th and 21st league goals of the season left Barca six points clear of Atletico Madrid, who could cut the gap to three by beating Real Betis on Sunday, with Real Madrid, 11 points back, at home to Alaves.
After eight consecutive Barcelona wins in La Liga, this result perhaps offered the chasing pack a little encouragement at the start of a testing month for the Catalans.
Real could inflict further disruption themselves. They play Barca in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals on Wednesday, in what will be the first of three Clasicos in a month. The latter two will be back-to-back, within four days.
But with Messi in this sort of form, any confidence from Real comes with an asterisk.
His 12 goals in his last nine games is the same number the whole Valencia squad managed in their first 15 league matches. Valencia were 15th in December, with only three wins, and their coach Marcelino was under pressure, just six months after propelling them back into the Champions League.
The club kept faith and results have improved. They have now lost only one of their last seven matches and are within sight of the top four.
Valencia deserved their first-half lead and could have scored sooner, Parejo drawing a smart save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen before Denis Cheryshev lashed the rebound off the far post.
The visitors rode their luck as two decisions went their way in a matter of minutes. First, Barca could have had a penalty when Gabriel Paulista blocked Nelson Semedo's shot with his hand.
Then the home team should have had a free-kick as Messi was bundled over by Parejo. The latter proved key, with Valencia sprawling forward on the counter-attack.
Rodrigo carried the ball 40 yards before slipping a cute reverse pass behind Vermaelen. Gameiro banged in the finish.
Valencia's penalty was clear after Sergi shoved Daniel Wass in the back, with Parejo whipping the ball into the corner to make it two.
Barca looked shell-shocked but the third goal in 15 minutes was theirs. Semedo beat Toni Lato to Arturo Vidal's pass and tumbled after a clip on his shin. Messi slammed the loose ball into the top corner but the whistle had blown. He rolled in the penalty instead.
Sergi's shot crashed against the post and Barca were dominant after half-time. Messi and Carles Alena had shots saved, and Messi headed over.
At the other end, on a rare Valencia break, Rodrigo should have made it three but, on the stretch, put it over from six yards.
That was in the 63rd minute, and in the 64th, Barcelona were level. Vidal teed up Messi, who teed up his own left foot and curled the ball inside the post.
The teams, and the crowd, seemed to take a breath, in anticipation of a late push, but it never came. The draw was a fair result.

Killie boss Clarke is among the favourites to be his replacement and ahead his side’s clash with Aberdeen on Saturday, he was asked if he had the desire at any stage to manage the national team.

He said: “Yes, at some stage. Whether it is now or not is a matter for you guys to talk about and speculate.

“I am fully focused on finishing the season well here at Kilmarnock.

“I don’t speculate, there is no point in doing that. I know how football works. I am fully focused on this job here.”

Celtic boss Neil Lennon believes the next Scotland manager should be Scottish as he ruled himself out the running.

Asked if international management was something that would interest him, the Northern Irishman said: “No. I like the day-to-day stuff.

“The Scotland job should be – whether you think this is antiquated or not – (for) a Scotland man and there is plenty of good candidates in line for the job.

“The decision to remove Alex was premature and seemed to be based on one result (3-0 defeat in Kazakhstan) which is scandalous from my point of view.

“There are a lot of good candidates out there and it is a prime job still.”
