West Brom have suffered a major blow to their play-off hopes after star man Dwight Gayle was sent off in their Championship semi-final first leg defeat at Aston Villa.
The striker scored in the first-half to put the Baggies in front at Villa Park, but was later shown two yellow cards and is now suspended for Tuesday’s return leg at the Hawthorns.
Villa lead the tie 2-1 after they battled back with two goals in three second-half minutes.
Captain Jack Grealish was the star for the hosts, setting up Conor Hourihane’s leveller and winning the penalty for Tammy Abraham to convert and earn a slender advantage in the tie.
Gayle was booked for time wasting when West Brom were still leading, and received his second yellow in the closing stages when he tried to get on the end of a cross and flew in on Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer.
Fans were raging on social media about the decision to send off the striker, who has netted 23 goals and provided eight assists for the Baggies during a season-long loan spell from Newcastle.
And it appears he may have played his last game in a West Brom shirt, with the Baggies now needing to turn around the tie without their main source of goal this season.
Gayle faces a one-match ban, meaning he would be available for the play-off final at Wembley if Albion stage a comeback to beat their West Midlands rivals.
