‘Losing out on Premier League title will NOT be a failure for Liverpool’, says Anfield legend John Barnes

John Barnes insists Liverpool’s season should NOT be deemed a failure if they are not crowned Premier League champions and get knocked out of the Champions League.

The title race is now out of the Reds’ hands after Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-0 to climb back to the top of the table.

The result was devastating for Liverpool fans, who were hoping old rivals United would take at least a point off Pep Guardiola’s men.

It means the Reds could finish season with 97 points – the highest points haul in their history – and still not be champions.

It would be a cruel way to lose the title race, with Liverpool agonisingly close to ending their wait for a first league title since 1990.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have undoubtedly been one of the best sides to watch this term and are still fighting in the Champions League ahead of a semi-final showdown Barcelona.

But even if they don’t manage to lift any silverware, Anfield legend Barnes says this campaign will not be disaster.

“When people say coming second is failure, no one can convince me that 97 points and losing one game is failure,” the former winger told Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“Plus, we’re in the Champions League semi-final against a Barcelona team that is one of the best ever.

“So even if we are beaten by Barcelona and finish second, for me, it’s been an incredible season that shows we’re moving forward.

“Next season we’ll be there or thereabouts once again.”

Klopp will not allow his team to slip at this stage of the campaign, believes Barnes

Barnes is also confident the Liverpool players will not be distracted by the Old Trafford result.

While there may be fears in Merseyside the psychological blow of City’s crucial win may impact their league run-in and upcoming Barcelona clash, the former star insists Jurgen Klopp will ensure the Reds keep their focus.

He added: “Before Barcelona, we have to play Huddersfield and beat them to keep pressure on Man City.

“But nothing Manchester City does affects Liverpool, because Jurgen Klopp has the players playing with commitment, determination and energy, regardless of whether it’s against Barcelona or Huddersfield.

“You see what Liverpool put in every performance, they don’t prioritise one game over an other, Klopp says take every game one at a time and give your all, so it wont affect the Barcelona situation one iota.”
