De Ligt and Van Dijk are Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman’s first-choice paring for the national team, with the 19-year-old starring for Ajax as they knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League.
Berbatov, who played for United for four years from 2008, told Betfair: “One player I would love to see at Old Trafford is Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, although I know every big club in Europe is after him.

“I watched him play against Real Madrid and he looks the real deal – so confident and assured for a player of his age.
“Having his international team-mate Virgil Van Dijk already in the Premier League could be a boost for any English team chasing De Ligt.

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the same role, said he would sign De Ligt if he worked at another club.Â
The Gunners are in desperate need of defenders after shipping 39 league goals so far this season, while error-prone defender Shkodran Mustafi was mocked by Arsenal fans after slipping up in a recent friendly against Al-Nasr.
Overmars said: “For me, De Ligt can play easily for any of the six best teams in the world.
