Rafael Benitez says contract talks with Newcastle have NOT advanced and urges the club to decide whether to progress to the next level or not quickly

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has revealed contract talks with the club have not advanced and urged the Magpies hierarchy to act quickly regarding what they plan to do in the transfer market.

Benitez, who has been in charge since the back end of the 2015/16 season, is out of contract this summer.

Benitez has put Newcastle on the verge of Premier League safety

He is adored by the Toon Army after getting the club back into the Premier League in the 2016/17 campaign and following their win over Southampton at St James̢۪ Park, Newcastle went ten points clear of the relegation zone.

It means the club are all but safe and can start planning for life in the top flight next season and Newcastle fans will hope that owner Mike Ashley will spend money in the summer window.

  • Newcastle’s team could be amazing next season if Rafael Benitez stays

  • Where Rafael Benitez could go if he leaves Newcastle this summer

And speaking to talkSPORT̢۪s Laura Woods and Stuart Pearce after the game, Benitez said Newcastle were now at a crossroads and had to decide if they wanted to go to the next level or continue to be a team that struggles to stay in the division.

Benitez said: â€Å“You can see the potential every single weekend.

Newcastle fans were very frustrated by Mike Ashley’s lack of spending last summer

Newcastle fans were very frustrated by Mike Ashley’s lack of spending last summer

â€Å“The city is behind the team, the stadium is full of fans every weekend and now we have to decide if we want to compete between 7th and 10th or between 15th and 17th.

â€Å“At the moment the wage bill is really really important, not just the transfer fees. If you want to attract good players with good quality you have to pay them good salaries because the other teams are doing that.

â€Å“The teams between 7th and 10th are spending £100million and they are spending money on players on £100,000 a week so we have to decide if we want to compete with them or not.

  • Rafael Benitez to be given £100million war chest over next two seasons – reports

â€Å“I’m not asking for anything. I want some balance between the money you can spend and pay in relation to the teams that compete.

â€Å“We have the likes of [Martin] Dubravka and [Salomon] Rondon who give everything and they give the young players the time to get better and better.

â€Å“Me, as a manager, I’m not asking for more I just want us to be sure that we clarify. It’s not what we say, it’s what we do.

On whether talks for a new contract have advanced, Benitez said: â€Å“No and I don’t want to take advantage of anything. At this stage of the season you have to make decisions.

Although Newcastle still have three games left this season, the manager called for the club to begin the recruitment process for new signings now.

He added:  â€Å“If you want to sign players then you have to do it now.

“You cannot keep talking and talking because you cannot pay more money than some of the other teams so you have to go early and you have to find the right one and you have to do it NOW.”

Champions League final iconic moments No.3: Chelsea captain John Terry’s slip against Manchester United in 2008

Ahead of the 2019 Champions League final, talkSPORT.com is looking back at some of the most memorable moments from previous finals.

Liverpool face Tottenham in an all-English final for the first time since 2008, when Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties to win the trophy.

John Terry missed a crucial penalty in Chelsea’s shootout defeat to Manchester United

Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino have been criticised for failing to win silverware with the Reds and Spurs, respectively, but one of them will end the season with European football’s biggest prize.

It is set to be an entertaining final with the likes of Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah going head-to-head on June 1.

Below, we take a look at No.3 on our list of iconic Champions League moments as John Terry’s slip in a penalty shootout proved costly against Manchester United 11 years ago.

No.3 – John Terry’s slip

Both sides had to get through gruelling semi-finals to make it to Moscow. Manchester United beat Barcelona, while Liverpool took Chelsea to extra-time as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba scored vital goals to book their place in the final.

Ahead of what was always likely to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final game for United, he was set to go off in style when he opened the scoring in the 26th minute. The winger connected with Wes Brown’s cross to send a powerful header past a helpless Petr Cech.

The Blues keeper then made an outstanding double save to deny Carlos Tevez and Michael Carrick, which stopped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side from doubling their lead.

Chelsea were level just before the break as Michael Essien’s speculative shot took two deflections before fortuitously landing into the path of Frank Lampard, who coolly slotted home from close-range.

With the scores level after 90 minutes and then 30 minutes of extra time, the final was decided on penalties.

Cech put Chelsea into the driving seat when he saved Ronaldo’s penalty – and after four perfect spot-kick from the Blues, Terry had the chance to win it for his club.

But in dramatic fashion, the Chelsea captain slipped and hit the post, gifting United a lifeline.

And it was a lifeline they took as Anderson and Ryan Giggs converted their penalties before Nicolas Anelka had his decisive spot-kick saved by Edwin Van der Ser as United won the shootout 6-5.

Chelsea won̢۪t let any players leave during club̢۪s transfer ban, says Andreas Christensen

Chelsea players will not be sold during the club̢۪s transfer ban, according to defender Andreas Christensen.

Chelsea have denied any wrongdoing and lodged an appeal with the governing body earlier this month.

However, the club were ‘astonished’ by FIFA’s decision to reject their request to freeze the ban during an appeal process.

Christensen, who has been used sparingly by manager Maurizio Sarri this season, told Ekstra Bladet: ”The messages we’ve got are that Chelsea can’t appeal the case and therefore want to keep all the players.

Football: Liverpool's TV income may top record 250 million after Champions League victory

LONDON (BLOOMBERG) - Liverpool's victory over Tottenham Hotspur to take the Champions League title on Saturday (June 1) will let the club make another claim: It'll become the first global football team to bring in more than £250 million (S$433.7 million) in a season from broadcast income.
The estimate, according to analyst Swiss Ramble, means the English club's overall revenue is edging closer to its Spanish rivals, Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Manchester United - the biggest sales generators among European football teams.
Swiss Ramble, an anonymous blogger who keeps a forensic score of football clubs' finances, tweeted a breakdown of club revenue on Monday, updating figures after Liverpool's 2-0 win. The data show broadcast income of £251 million in the 2018/2019 season for Liverpool, with Tottenham at £235.2 million and Manchester City and Manchester United following behind.
Uefa, the regulatory body for the top football competitions in Europe, will not release the final figures for a few weeks. A spokesman for Liverpool declined to comment.
Broadcast revenue for teams has been climbing as intense competition for TV rights sold by leagues has steadily boosted their value. The previous record was held by Liverpool and Real Madrid at £222.6 million in the 2017/2018 season, according to Deloitte LLP partner Dan Jones.
Liverpool came seventh last year among European clubs in Deloitte's Football Money League table, which ranks football teams in terms of their annual revenue. Largely due to the strength of the Premier League's broadcast deals, six English clubs rank in Europe's top 10. But they all come behind Spain's Real Madrid and Barcelona, with revenue totalling €750.9 million (S$1.15 billion) and €690.4 million, respectively.
Liverpool "will surely be targeting the top five" this year, Jones said. "Domestic television revenues are up 8 per cent for the next three-year round, so that will help."

Liverpool has been a sound investment for American businessman John Henry, the principal owner of Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox. Fenway Sports bought Liverpool for about US$500 million (S$684.57 million) in 2010 and the club had an enterprise value of around US$2.4 billion at the start of 2019, according to KPMG.

Laurence Bassini EXCLUSIVE: Bolton buyer reveals Ken Anderson stumbling blocks in takeover deal

Laurence Bassini has told talkSPORT he is waiting for confirmation if Bolton will be hit with a 12-point deduction next season before he commits to buying the Championship club.

The British businessman has revealed to Jim White there is a danger Bolton could be penalised after current chairman Ken Anderson attempted to put the crisis-hit club into administration.

Bassini has accused Anderson, derided by Trotters fans for his mismanagement of the club and their finances, of ‘not being able to let go’ and has urged the club to give him the answers he needs.

Bolton chairman Ken Anderson wants to sell Bolton

Bolton chairman Ken Anderson wants to sell Bolton

The former Watford owner joined talkSPORT on Thursday to share an update on his ongoing attempt to save the relegated club from their financial struggles.

Bassini’s takeover has been agreed, although doubts have been raised over the past week about whether the deal will go through, with reports claiming he had failed to prove to the EFL he has  sufficient funds.

It was also suggested he had failed to fulfil his vow to pay players̢۪ outstanding wages for March and April, although he has insisted that was taken out of his hands.

Bassini says he now has the proof of funds, but admitted to talkSPORT a few stumbling blocks still stand in the way of him becoming the new owner of Bolton Wanderers – including an additional £14million of debt he must now look to settle on top of what he has already promised.

Speaking to Jim White on Thursday, he said: â€Å“I’ve now got the proof of funds, which I said I would have.

â€Å“Where I wanted to pay the wages for the players last week, I’m not controlling the mandate on that.

â€Å“I’ve arranged to have the money in place, and I’m adding some money into it as well, so the club will have what it needs.

â€Å“But there is a problem – there is a lot more debt there than we thought, and it means we’ll probably we’ll need another £14million on top.

talkSPORT host Jim White spoke with Laurence Bassini on Thursday

4

talkSPORT host Jim White spoke with Laurence Bassini on Thursday

â€Å“Another problem is a couple of weeks ago Ken Anderson tried to put the club into administration, and because he did this it triggered a default, like a breach, which carries a 12-point penalty.

â€Å“So it means they’ll go into the new season with the risk of getting a 12-point deduction. So obviously I’ll need an answer on that.

â€Å“The EFL have said they are speaking to the club, they’ve asked them for information and they haven’t got it yet. The club needs to give this information.

â€Å“I want to do this deal, but if you’re going to take 12 points off, how can I complete on it? What chance are we going to have to get this club up if that happens?

Bolton are in serious financial trouble and face an uncertain future

4

Bolton are in serious financial trouble and face an uncertain future

â€Å“I told Anderson I was doing the deal, but he still did it. The whole time he’s told various people that I wanted him to stay on as a director, to still be at the club – what are you talking about? The guy can’t let go!

â€Å“I need those assurances and I’m ready to go. I don’t want to go into this with a 12-point deduction.

â€Å“I’m not going to say we might as well sit in administration, but that’s where we’re at.

â€Å“If that’s the case, in a way it’s better to do that because we’ll save £10m and will have £10m more to build on the club.

â€Å“It’s a very serious issue.”

Bolton fans have campaigned for Anderson to sell their club this season

4

Bolton fans have campaigned for Anderson to sell their club this season

Bassini continued his tirade against Anderson, following news the hotel located at the club̢۪s University of Bolton Stadium has been temporarily closed this week, apparently against his wishes.

â€Å“The hotel closed yesterday and it didn’t need to close,” he added.

â€Å“I wanted to clear it up last week, I insisted upon it, I would have got a validation order and they would have had an extra £200,000 to pay all the staff today.

â€Å“But no, he’s got to be stubborn and do mad things.

â€Å“That is why this club is the way it is. Somebody should have stepped in a long time ago to sort it out, because there are serious, serious problems there and you just don’t get the correct answers you should be getting.”
