Aston Villa could face points deduction in Premier League after suspected breach of Financial Fair Play rules

Aston Villa could face a points deduction in their first season back in the Premier League, reports claim.

Dean Smith’s side ended their three-year exile from the top-flight after beating Derby in last weekend’s Championship play-off final.

But Villa could be hit with a points deduction if they are found guilty of breaking profit and sustainability rules.

The Villains have reported huge losses after spending heavily following relegation to the second tier in 2016.

In March, Birmingham were slapped with a nine-point deduction by the EFL after breaking financial rules. The Blues recorded a loss of £37.5million in the 12-month period ending in June 2018.

The Daily Mail claim there is reluctance from Premier League chiefs to hit a newly-promoted club with a points deduction, which would make it even harder for Jack Grealish and co. to stay up.

And it has led to concern from Championship clubs that Villa could be let off the hook.

In April, Smith remained confident that Villa had complied with Financial Fair Play regulations.

He said: “It’s out of my remit. My chief executive tells me we’re fully compliant.”
