Deadline day ends with little drama

Deadline day ends with little drama

LONDON • While there was little significant activity at relegation-threatened Premier League clubs - apart from Newcastle United - bucking the trend of last-gasp, big-money transfers in a bid to try to survive, an old face returned to the English top flight on deadline day.
Burnley cheekily referred to the robot celebration popularised by Peter Crouch as they announced his signing on their social media accounts on Thursday evening.
The veteran striker, who has yet to start a game since last September, moved in a swop deal with Championship side Stoke City, with forward Sam Vokes heading the other way.
Despite joining at the age of 38 on a contract until the end of the season, Crouch, who has scored 108 goals in 462 league games, insisted that he was not washed up and "still wanted to achieve things".
The former England international said: "I want to get more games in the Premier League and would love to add to the 100 Premier League goals. It's a club that is stable in the Premier League now. We have got to make sure we stay there this year and build on that."
"I know I can impact games at this level. I scored goals last season in the Premier League and I know I will do the same again if given the opportunity this year."
Only 23 players have scored more than Crouch in the league and he just needs four more goals to climb into the top 20.
In addition to their £21 million (S$37 million) record buy of Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron from Major League Soccer side Atlanta United, the Magpies landed Italy Under-21 defender Antonio Barreca on loan from struggling Monaco.
Leicester were also beneficiaries as the French Ligue 1 side trimmed their squad, taking Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans on loan.
Elsewhere, Cardiff signed Leandro Bacuna, a Curacao utility player from Reading, but did not find a replacement for Argentinian striker Emiliano Sala, whose plane went down over the Channel Islands two days after signing for a club-record fee of £15 million.
Fulham moved for Serbia winger Lazar Markovic on a free transfer from Liverpool for the remainder of the season, after he was given a glowing endorsement by compatriot and club top-scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Club co-owner Tony Khan, who also secured the services of Norway defender Havard Nordtveit on loan from Hoffenheim, felt Markovic would strengthen their attack.
He said: "Lazar Markovic is a gifted young player. He has the support of our manager (Claudio Ranieri)."
In Europe, Barcelona agreed a deal to sign Brazil Under-20 defender Emerson from Atletico Mineiro for €12 million (S$18.5 million) in the summer, while Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa opted to leave German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund for a loan move to Turkish outfit Besiktas.

Arsenal news: Reiss Nelson says Hoffenheim loan has made him grow up

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson believes he has grown up during the German “mission” he’s been on.

The England Under-21 international is heading into the final few weeks of his loan spell at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

A stellar start, injuries and struggles with the language have sent the Gunners forward on a steep learning curve.

He was even dropped from the squad for the 2-1 win over Nurnberg earlier this month which boss Julian Nagelsmann described as an “educational measure”.

“I was late to training, I was 20 minutes late, and that’s something I need to learn from,” Nelson said, ahead of England Under-21s’ friendly with Germany in Bournemouth on Tuesday.

“You can make mistakes but it’s your job and you shouldn’t be late.

“I held my hand up and I said sorry to him and we both moved on as bigger men.

The England Under-21 international says he’s matured a lot during his spell in Germany

“He put me in the squad the next week because I’d been doing well.

“I’ve been out there for 10 months by myself. It’s not been easy and I haven’t had my mum or my brother about.

“I’ve got to do my own shopping, I haven’t got many friends out there but it’s my job and I’m there to play football.

“When I do come back I do like to go out with my friends and see family because in Germany I’m on a mission.

“I do like to enjoy myself when I’m back but that’s normal for a guy my age.

“I don’t get homesick but my family are very good, they’ll fly straight over and my brother will come and stay for a month and my mum will come over any time I ask her.”

Six Bundesliga goals in his opening seven games earned the 19-year-old a Young Lions debut in October.

He scored twice in his first two games – an impudent backheel helping the under-21s to a 6-0 win over Andorra to wrap up Euro 2019 qualification before netting in a 2-0 victory in Scotland.

But since then form and fitness – Nelson suffered a back injury in January – has seen the forward struggle to make an impact and the young Gunner is yet to start in 2019 for Hoffenheim, who are ninth in the Bundesliga.

He is in regular touch with Jadon Sancho, but while Sancho – who started in England’s 5-0 win over the Czech Republic on Friday – has become a star at Borussia Dortmund, Nelson is pragmatic with his own development.

“Football is like that, you dip in form – especially at my age – but the main thing is you keep your focus,” he said, having played 24 times this term.

“You know what your targets are. Mine were just to play for Hoffenheim and do well when I get the chance.

“I always try to be positive but not expect too much of myself, just have a nice balance.

“After injury I was a bit sluggish in training, but with the help from the guys at Hoffenheim, they spoke to me well and nurtured me back in slowly.”

Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker has a challenge for Reiss Nelson. The young winger is one of several Gunners stars out on loan this season after he joined Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the summer and has made quite the impression during his short time there.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he is worried Manchester United’s luck might run out after they scraped past West Ham United on Saturday evening.

Tuesday’s huge Champions League quarter-final challenge in Barcelona looms large, but attention first turned to securing a return to European football’s top table next season.

United moved within two points of the top four as a pair of Pogba penalties sealed victory at Old Trafford, but those in attendance will know how fortunate Solskjaer’s side were to have secured a point, never mind three.

Felipe Anderson saw an early opener wrongly ruled out for offside, but the Brazilian cancelled out Pogba’s contentiously-awarded penalty shortly after half-time as the Hammers capitalised on David De Gea’s poor throw.

The United goalkeeper made amends as Manuel Pellegrini’s men pushed for a winner, producing an outstanding one-handed save from Michail Antonio shortly after the West Ham substitute rattled the goalframe.

Yet the visitors returned to the capital empty-handed after Pogba smashed home his second spot-kick to keep up United’s top-four charge on an evening when the performance clearly alarmed Solskjaer.

“You want to win games, especially at this stage of the season, you know that points are so vital,” Solskjaer said.

“We know we didn’t perform and we know we should perform better, but we’ve got away with three points.

“I’ve been in that dressing room so many times on the other side and the other coach says, ‘We played well today but…’

“If you keep playing this, you’ll get enough points- that’s what I would say to Manuel. If they keep performing, they’ll get results.

“But if we keep performing like this, our luck might run out so we have to get better performances.

“But then again sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.”

Meanwhile, Luton Town pipped Barnsley to the title with a win over Oxford United, while Doncaster Rovers claimed the final play-off spot ahead of Peterborough United.

Southend had looked to be heading down before Stephen Humphrys struck with just three minutes left to seal a 2-1 win against Sunderland, who will take part in the play-offs.

John White had put the home side in front at Roots Hall from a corner just before half-time, but Chris Maguire equalised with a penalty in the 75th minute.

Southend’s late show sent Plymouth down, despite the Pilgrims beating fellow relegation batters Scunthorpe 3-2.

Walsall’s goalless draw at Shrewsbury was not enough to prevent them from dropping into League Two.

AFC Wimbledon, though, survived after a 0-0 draw away to bottom club Bradford.

At the other end of the table, Doncaster made sure of their play-off place with a 2-0 win over Coventry.

Peterborough beat Burton 3-1, but finished in seventh place – just a point behind Rovers.

Charlton go into the play-offs having ended the season in third following a 4-0 home win over Rotherham, with Joe Aribo, Lyle Taylor and Krystian Bielik all on the scoresheet at The Valley.

Portsmouth are fourth after a 1-1 draw against Accrington, while Sunderland’s defeat sees them confirmed in fifth place.

Ivan Toney had scored twice for Peterborough in their 3-1 win over Burton, but it was not enough to sneak into the top six.

Portsmouth had to come from behind after Sean McConville put Accrington ahead soon after the restart, with Ben Close equalising on the hour.

Barnsley had already been sure of automatic promotion following midweek results, but could not end the season with victory at the Memorial Stadium.

Kieffer Moore had put the Tykes ahead in the 12th minute but defender Liam Lindsay was sent off for a second caution just before half-time.

Alex Rodman’s deflected shot drew Rovers level after 71 minutes before the winger snatched all three points in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Tom Eaves scored twice in the first half as managerless Gillingham won 3-0 at Blackpool.

Football’s most expensive defenders: Where Lucas Hernandez’s Bayern transfer ranks with Virgil van Dijk and others

Lucas Hernandez’s £68m move to Bayern Munich has propelled him into the top 10 most expensive defenders in world football.

Unsurprisingly, seven of those ten are currently plying their trade in the Premier League.

talkSPORT.com takes you through the shortlist below…

1. VIRGIL VAN DIJK – Southampton to Liverpool, £75m

Liverpool eventually sealed a deal for Van Dijk in January 2018, having been accused of tapping home up by Southampton just six months earlier.

Van Dijk costs a hefty £75m, making him the most expensive defender in world football, but he has more than proved his worth during his spell on Merseyside to date.

The Dutchman has played an integral role in Liverpool’s title bid this season at the heart of their defence.

2. LUCAS HERNANDEZ – Atletico Madrid to Bayern Munich, £68m

The World Cup winner had been mooted for a move to Bayern for many months, before the Bundesliga leaders finally finalised a mega money move for the left-back earlier this week.

The German giants splashed out the £68m fee required to trigger Lucas’ exit at the end of the season, meaning now they have a defender who could play at the very top for the next decade or more.

3. AYMERIC LAPORTE – Monaco to Manchester City, £57m

Laporte signed a two-year contract extension at the Premier League champions last month, taking his deal at the Etihad to 2025.

The French centre-back joined City from Spanish La Liga club Athletic Bilbao for a club record £57m in January 2018, but to date has still not represented the French senior team.

4. BENJAMIN MENDY – Monaco to Manchester City, £52m

Pep Guardiola broke the record for a defender when he signed Mendy from Monaco in July 2017.

An enigmatic and colourful character off the field, the left-back rose to prominence as one of Europe’s most exciting full-backs in the 2016-17 season as Monaco won Ligue 1 – while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

His arrival spearheaded a spectacular overhaul of City’s backline, which saw them spend close to £165m on three defenders and goalkeeper Ederson, but two serious knee injuries have curtailed what looked to be a promising start to life in England.

5. DAVID LUIZ – Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain, £50m

Paris Saint-Germain paid a whopping fee to sign Brazil international David Luiz from Chelsea in 2014.

He won Ligue 1 in both of his seasons at PSG, but returned to Stamford Bridge in a £34m deal in August 2016, making it three top-flight titles in a row come the end of that season.

Luiz, who turns 32 next month, is out of contract this summer but has made it clear he wants to stay in west London.

6. KYLE WALKER – Tottenham to Manchester City, £50m

Walker arrived at City for a whopping fee back in July 2017 from Tottenham, and he hasn’t looked back since.

He quickly established himself as a key component of the defence, winning two Carabao Cup titles and the Premier League to date.

The Champions League and FA Cup could yet be added to that list this season.

7. JOHN STONES – Everton to Manchester City, £47.5m

City have underlined their financial muscle in the transfer window for many years, in particular when acquiring England talent.

Another one of those signings, John Stones, has shown steady improvement after a tough first season at the Etihad following his big-money move from the Toffees in August 2016.

8. EDER MILITAO – Porto to Real Madrid, £42m

Another transfer set to go through at the end of the season, Madrid caught many by surprise when it was announced earlier this month they had paid the release clause of Porto’s Brazil international Militao.

The 21-year-old was only brought to Europe from Sao Paulo in 2018, appearing somewhat of a gamble at this stage by Los Blancos.

9. DAVINSON SANCHEZ – Ajax to Tottenham, £36.6m

Spurs waited several weeks to make their first signing of the close-season transfer window in 2017, but they did so in some style, smashing their club record to bring Sanchez to north London.

The former Atletico Nacional man reportedly also caught Barcelona’s attention during Ajax’s run to the Europa League final in 2017 and has looked a solid addition to the Premier League since arriving.

10. LEONARDO BONUCCI – Juventus to AC Milan, £35.2m

A major falling out with Juve head coach Massimiliano Allegri led to Bonucci being allowed to join Serie A rivals AC Milan in 2017, who opened their war chest in a bid to return to the Champions League.

Bonucci won six Serie A titles at Juventus, but such success did not follow at San Siro.

His form suffered until he secured a return to Turin just a year later.
