Jose Mourinho hits back at Gary Neville and Paul Scholes following criticism of former Manchester United manager

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken a thinly-veiled swipe at both Gary Neville and Paul Scholes for their managerial shortcomings.

Neville only lasted four months in charge of La Liga outfit Valencia, before he was dismissed in March 2016, while Scholes’ tenure at League Two side Oldham was even shorter, the 44-year-old leaving after only 31 days at the helm.

The pair, though, were often critics of Mourinho in their role as television pundits.

Mourinho, who was sacked in December despite winning the League Cup, Europa League and finishing second the previous season, has hit back.

“We have even in England, former top players, amazing in front of the screen,” Mourinho said in an interview with RT Sport.

“They go to football clubs, and after two months, goodbye, let’s go home because this is not right for us.

“So there are things you have it, or you don’t have it.”

One of the most successful managers of all time, Mourinho has won trophies with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid, but does not believe everyone is cut out to make it in the world of management.

“There is one part of it [management] that people sometimes forget, even some top pundits, they forget it, which is you have to be born with some talent adapted,’ the 56-year-old added.

“It’s a little bit the same thing as what football academies can make with players.

“I think it’s a natural knowledge and understanding of the game.

“Leadership qualities, communication qualities, emotional intelligence because that is another thing that technology and experience at other levels can’t replicate which is the levels of pressure you are at.

“It is one thing us sat in front of a screen, analysing a game live, saying ‘I will take that one and I will put that one’.

“That decision when you are on the touchline, can you on the touchline have the same state of mind to be calm and be an analyst of the game?

“Can you be brave enough to take the pressure?”

Mourinho is currently taking a break from management and in his role as a pundit explained he will not take another job before understanding exactly what is required of him, insisting rivals Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola had an advantage over him.

He has been linked with the Celtic, PSG and Real Madrid jobs in recent months and said: â€Å“In my next job I will not be starting a conversation without knowing exactly what the club wants and what the club has to give in terms of structure and the club objectives.”
