Sunday Times Rich List 2019: Rory McIlroy, Sergio Aguero, Anthony Joshua and Gareth Bale lead the richest young sports stars list in Britain

Rory McIlroy is the wealthiest sports star under the age of 30 in Britain and Ireland according to the 2019 Sunday Times Rich List.

The Northern Irishman retains his place at the top of the list after becoming only third golfer ever to win four majors and 15 PGA titles before turning 30.

With a host of lucrative sponsorship deals including 10-year $100m contracts with both Nike and TaylorMade, and associations with Omega watches and NBC sports, it is no surprise to see the 30-year-old’s net increase of £28m in his wealth.

Despite enduring a tough year in Spain, Gareth Bale is second on the list after seeing his net worth increase by £20m. Despite looking certain to move on, the Wales international’s contract with Real Madrid is worth £18.2m a year after tax.

Next up, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero takes his place on the list after seeing his wealth increase by £10m as his goals have helped fire the Citizens to within touching distance of the Premier League title. The Argentine earns about £15m a year, including a weekly salary of £250,000.

The only other non-footballer on the list besides McIlroy is world heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua, who saw a £14m increase in wealth this year. The Watford-born slugger is set to make his US debut next month and earned a reported £15m alone from his fight with Alexander Povetkin at Wembley in September 2018.

Also on the list is Paul Pogba, who saw his net worth rise by £12m this year. Pogba, who ranks eighth in the Young Sports Stars Rich List, was a World Cup winner with France last year, and has played for Manchester United since his record-breaking move in 2016 on a £290,000-a-week contract.

Raheem Sterling is the third member of the PFA team on the Young Sports Stars Rich List. The Manchester City winger has enjoyed a stellar season, capped by scoring his first hat-trick for England and emerging as an eloquent leader of the fight against racism in football. He signed a new contract with City last November worth £300,000 a week and enters the Rich List for the first time with wealth put at £18m.
