Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has revealed positive talks have been held over extending his stay at St James̢۪ Park.
Magpies fans are desperate for the Spaniard to sign a new deal with his current one set to expire on June 30.
Talks over a new contract have dragged on with Benitez wanting assurances over transfer funds from owner Mike Ashley, but the Spaniard̢۪s latest comments will please supporters.
He said: â€Å“I was talking to Lee Charnley [Newcastle’s managing director] this week, we will continue talking and let you know as soon as we have more news.
â€Å“I am positive that we are talking and everybody knows what my idea is. I would like to see this club growing and growing, and going where I think it deserves to be.â€
When asked if the talks had been positive, he added: â€Å“Yes. I can say yes, it seems that things are at least moving forward. Maybe we are getting closer.
â€Å“It was positive because Lee knows what I’m talking about and what I think. And I know what they think. We can now move forward. At least we’re talking now.â€
Benitez won promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking in 2017 before securing a top-10 Premier League finish last season.
And he has guided Newcastle to top-flight safety this term, despite having limited funds to spend last summer.

He said: â€Å“I know the fans are supporting me and the fans are trying to convince me to stay and they try to go for the emotional way, like they did in the first year.
“I know that and I appreciate that. I am really pleased with that because I am happy in the city, I am happy here and as I have said before, the staff, everybody is doing a very good job and we are very comfortable here.”
