Celtic news: Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says Old Firm rivals playing the ‘victim card’

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has accused Celtic of playing the ‘victim card’.

The Gers’ 2-1 defeat at Celtic Park on Sunday had several controversial moments with Scott Brown at the centre of them.

Alfredo Morelos was shown a red card for elbowing the Hoops captain in the face in the first-half, while Andy Halliday received a second yellow card for his part in a post-match clash with the veteran midfielder.

Ryan Kent could receive a two-game ban for lashing out at Brown during the game.

Morelos will serve a four-game ban after receiving his fifth red card of the season, while Halliday is suspended for Wednesday night’s home game with Hearts.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said he was angry with the treatment Brown received in the Old Firm derby.

But Gerrard hit back, saying: “Neil Lennon will say what Neil Lennon wants to say. His assistant will say whatever he wants to say.

“If they want to play the victim card, that’s up to them.

“Celtic are entitled to celebrate – the supporters, the club and the individual players. That’s fine. We haven’t got a problem with that at all. We’re on the end of it this time.

“There’s one more Old Firm left we’re looking forward to and we need to make sure the result is different to the one we’ve just been involved in.

“I’ve got no problem with Celtic celebrating. How will the players react? I know what I’d do.

“We can’t really control what’s going on with other people’s reactions on social media and how they celebrate.

“All we can do is soak it up, accept it and move on to the next challenge – but remember it.”

Rangers’ hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership are all but over following Sunday’s loss, with Celtic 13 points clear and on course to claim an eighth consecutive top-flight title.
